A shipmate caught this photo of Joseph taking a brief break aboard the USS Vernon LST-1161).
It was August 20, 1969. The ship was operating in the Vietnam's Mekong Delta, delivering troops and equipment. In the middle of demanding work and an uncertain time the camera preserved the smile of a 20 year-old sailor.
"One of my shipmates' shot this photo of me while flashing the "peace sign" and while we were taking a break."
